Peter Eckersley

Dir. Research at Partnership on AI

Peter Eckersley serves as the Director of Research at the Partnership on AI (PAI), a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at ensuring that AI is developed and used for the benefit of all. In this role, he leads research on AI policy and ethics, addressing a broad range of AI-related concerns such as ethical and safety translations into mathematical constraints, and policy development around high-stakes applications of AI.

Before joining PAI, Peter was the Chief Computer Scientist for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), where he led a team of technologists on various computer security and privacy projects. These include initiatives such as Let's Encrypt, Certbot, Panopticlick, HTTPS Everywhere, the SSL Observatory, and Privacy Badger.

Peter holds a PhD in computer science and law from the University of Melbourne, focusing his research on the practicality and desirability of using alternative compensation systems to legalize P2P file sharing and similar distribution tools.

He currently serves on several boards and councils, including the Internet Security Research Group, the Advisory Council of the Open Technology Fund, and is a Distinguished Technology Fellow at EFF. Additionally, Peter is an affiliate of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, and he has previously served on the board of the US branch of the Center for Effective Altruism and as an advisor to the 3D microscopy startup, 3scan.
