Brendan McMahan is a Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google, leading the company's work on decentralized and privacy-preserving machine learning. He co-founded the team that innovated the concept of federated learning, developing privacy-preserving techniques for decentralized data. Brendan's contributions have led to the integration of federated learning in several Google products including Gboard and Pixel phones. His team has also introduced the TensorFlow Federated project, an open-source framework for computations on decentralized data.
At RAAIS 2019, Brendan presented on the various research challenges associated with federated learning, covering topics such as user-level differential privacy, cryptographic secure aggregation, and client resource usage optimization.
Before focusing on federated and privacy-preserving machine learning, Brendan worked on online learning, large-scale convex optimization, and reinforcement learning. He joined Google in 2007 after receiving his Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
